D-EMDV

Stearman PT17When someone is aking: What could be more beautiful than a Stearman? There is just one possible answer: A second Stearman!!!

And this is not any Stearman! It is the powerful 450hp E75. Powered by a P&W 9-cylinder radial engine with approximately 18 liters capacity, it has conquered our hearts immediately. The D-EMDV is in the same excellent condition as our first Boeing Stearman N60HW.

This historic biplane is equiped with the latest avionics and perfect for long trips.

A variable metal pitch propeller sets the power to perfect and makes with its characteristic sound very clear who is the deer of the airfield ;)

Enthusiasts of the historic aviation often asking us, which kind of the 2 airplanes you favourize to fly?
A question which isn't easy to answer. The red 450 HP Stearman has to be handled a bit cumbersome on the ground, but for take-off it has almost unlimited power.
A power calculation for all influencing take-off procedures like temperature, barometric, pressure, altitude, etc. gives an impish smile signalizing: No Limits!

However, this power must come from somewhere and we notice this in combination with the fuel consumption. During take-off the fuel consumption is much higher than with a  220 HP Stearman. During cruise the red airplane can be controlled very precisly and easily. Due to the fact that it is equiped with a controllable pitch propeller it is faster and the economy at cruising altitude is appropriated. During landing it does not float so much and we are delighted that it has a lockable tailwheel, which makes landings on concrete runways much more comfortable.

Probably the different behavior of the two radial engines is a key differentiator. The 9 cylinder jumps to exellent and responds delayed. But there exists always power reserves. The little brother with 7 cylinders is a bit more agile and somehow original. Smoothness is not one of his main attributes. But he is frugal and has a pleasant, sonorous voice. In short:  It's like any family: Everybody has its indiviual strenghts. This fact makes it easy for us to love both biplanes the same way.
